Celebrating 30 years of the Trevor Inch Memorial Library
Details
Date21st December 1996
DescriptionIn December 2026, the Trevor Inch Memorial Library will celebrate its 30th anniversary! First opening its doors to the Waimakariri community on 21 December 1996, the library has remained a vibrant, vital, and ever-changing community hub.
Although, this collection is not only about the Trevor Inch Memorial Library itself, but also the history of the library’s role in Rangiora (and the Waimakariri District), more broadly. The presence of the library has been noticeable since the early days of European settlement in Rangiora, with the earliest records of a library dating back to the late 19th century. The library first took the form of the ‘Library & Reading Room’ in the Mechanics Hall & Literary Institute, later moving into a room in the Rangiora Town Hall. In 1966 the library moved into its long-term home on Percival Street – where it remains to this day. The library was housed in the (second) Rangiora Borough Council Chambers building until 1996 when the Trevor Inch Memorial Library was proposed and constructed. The modern library was named after the late Trevor M. Inch, who served as the Waimakariri District Mayor from 1989-1995. He is remembered by this library; a facility he worked hard to achieve.
The Trevor Inch Memorial Library has seen many changes – physical, technological, practical, cultural, and social – over the past 30 years, but has remained at the beating heart of the Rangiora community. With plans in the works for an expansion of the current space, the next 30 years are bright with possibility, further growth, adaptation, and – most importantly – communal connection. Let this be a snapshot in time of where the library has been over the years; what forms it has taken; what it has meant to the community, and what its future is looking like in the 21st century.
This collection contains media spanning a wide time frame; from the late 1800s, all the way up to the present day (2025). Although certainly not complete, it encapsulates what the library has evolved to be, and all that it offers.
