The Ashley-Rakahuri Rivercare Group promoted the Wrybill ngutu pare for Bird of the Year, 2025 and enlisted the help of of United Nations Sustainable Development Goals ambassadors from Pegasus Bay School. Shelley Topp, photo journalist notes that the Wrybill ngutu pare is:
"Only found in New Zealand. Unique in that this species is the only bird in the world whose beak turns sideways, and always the same way, to the right.
In Canterbury many regard wrybills as the icon of braided-river birds. Their bent bill allows them to reach under rounded river stones to feed on insect larvae, and skim the surface of mudflats to gather micro-organisms from the biofilm layer. When breeding, wrybills are very territorial. They tend to nest and feed at least 200m apart along the river, and often return to almost the same spot each year. Their eggs and chicks are extremely well camouflaged."

Pegasus Bay School's United Nations Sustainable Development Goals ambassadors with their leader, Pegasus Bay School teacher Sally Patterson, joined the campaign. They visited the Rangiora Library, along  with``BDub’’, the Ashley-Rakahuri Rivercare Group’s wrybill/ngutu pare mascot to encourage locals to vote, spoke to Mayor Dan Gordon and also chatted to other members of the community. They handed out badges that had Grant Davey's photo of the Wrybill ngutu pare on them to help their cause.
