"The inspiration for Humans of Waimakariri came from an extraordinary photo blog called Humans of New York that was established in 2010 by photographer Brandon Stanton with the aim of portraying the diversity of New York people and showcasing their stories.
Humans of New York has inspired many other Humans of…… around the world, including Humans of Otautahi-Christchurch.

As a photo journalist for the North Canterbury News I am fortunate to meet many amazing people so I thought that gave me a unique opportunity to establish a Humans of Waimakariri exhibition.
The people in this exhibition are just some of the individuals I have had the pleasure of meeting, photographing and doing stories about.
Not all of the photos in this exhibition were taken by me. Three or four were supplied by other photographers and in those cases their work was greatly appreciated and has been acknowledged in the HOW exhibition.

While talking with Sally O’Connell, the Waimakariri Libraries Local History & Heritage Co-ordinator in charge of the Waimakariri Heritage (WH) website, one day earlier this year, I mentioned to her that I was interested in establishing a Humans of Waimakariri photographic exhibition. She loved the idea and generously offered to host it on the WH website which I think is a perfect fit for it.

The HOW exhibition is intended to be an ongoing one so photographs of new humans and their stories will be added from time to time throughout each year in the future.
The idea is to create a portfolio of Waimakariri people and document their lives at this point in time.

Thanks very much to everyone who agreed to be part of this exhibition. It has been a pleasure getting to know you, learning your stories and photographing you. Thanks also to Kate Henson, Fiona Spencer, Sara Green and my husband Nevin Topp for supplying their awesome HOW photographs, and Oxford astrophotographer Gary Naulls, for his beautiful night sky photo used to introduce this exhibition.
