Description"This week we opened the new Ruataniwha Kaiapoi Civic Centre, housing the Kaiapoi Library, Museum, Service Centre and Art Space. At the opening on Saturday 17 January 2015, Mayor David Ayers captured the essence of the connection between the name and the purpose of the facility when he said that: “As the original Ruataniwha (an early local settlement) was a place where people came together to fish, hunt and gather food, may this civic centre also be a place where people come together for productive purpose.”
More than a 1,000 visitors have passed through the centre every day since it opened a week ago. The Library enrolled more than 250 new members in the first few days of operation and interest remains high. The Children’s area has been a big hit and the Summer Reading Programme has been running at full steam. Adult customers are delighted with the quality of the collection and the amount of new stock in the Library and users of the public PCs and 24/7 wifi have been quick to avail themselves of the full range of internet services. The Library has received a flood of items returned by members who have travelled from all over the District to visit the new facility and as the Library is open seven days a week, with a late night to 7pm on Thursdays, there are plenty of opportunities for people to enjoy the new spaces."
