DescriptionBrian has had a long association with the arts in Waimakariri. He joined the Community Arts Council in 1988. This became the Waimakariri Community Arts Council and Brian became chair in 1990. At the time there was no public art collection or art gallery in Rangiora and Brian saw the need for this.
The Waimakariri District Council were looking at expanding the Council Service Centre and Library in Rangiora. The decision was made to build a new library. Janice Skurr (Mayor from 1995-2001) was a supporter of this idea and when the new library was built, the historic Council chamber was included in the design and designated as a gallery space. The name Chamber Gallery was first used by a journalist who was reporting on one of the exhibitions held in the new space and that name was adopted by the Arts Council.
The first exhibition in the new gallery was “Connections”. An annual programme of exhibitions and concerts was created and a reputation for getting the “who’s who” of the local art world to exhibit was gained. This programme required a balance and variety of art mediums to be displayed.
Brian was also involved in the establishment of the Waimakariri Art Collection Trust in 1995. This is a group of people including a District councillor, a Waimakariri Community Arts Council member and a member of the Rangiora High School Art department, who acquire pieces of art to go on display in public areas. This occurs through gifts of art works, a small commission from each exhibition in the Chamber Gallery and donations. The works, in a variety of mediums including painting, ceramics and sculpture can be seen in Waimakariri Libraries, inside Council service centres and in the wider community.
Brian resigned his participation in the Waimakariri Community Arts Council in 2024 after 43 years service. His official farewell took place on 30 November 2024 at the Chamber Gallery.
